Terms of Use

The rules for using Sift — written in plain English. What you agree to, how subscriptions work, what our AI isn't, and how we handle disputes. No fine print.

These Terms of Service govern your use of Sift — the mobile app, the web surfaces, and any associated services we operate. By creating an account or using Sift, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.

We've written them in plain English on purpose. The service is simple: scan packaged food, get an AI-generated health score. These Terms explain what you can do, what we can do, and what happens if something goes wrong.

Who can use Sift

You must be at least 13 years old to use Sift. In the EU or EEA you must be at least 16 where required by local law. If you're under 18 in the United States, you need a parent or legal guardian to agree to these Terms on your behalf.

Sift is not a medical service and is not designed for children under the minimum ages above. Businesses are not permitted to use Sift for commercial scanning or cataloging of their inventory without separate written permission from us.

Your account

  • You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure.
  • One account per person. Don't share your login or create duplicate accounts.
  • Keep your email address current so we can reach you about security, billing, or policy changes.
  • Provide accurate information when you sign up. Don't impersonate anyone.
  • If you suspect your account has been compromised, email legal@siftapps.com immediately.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that are inactive for over 24 months, violate these Terms, or are flagged for abuse. See § 11 for details.

Subscriptions & billing

Sift offers paid subscription tiers — currently Premium (single-user unlimited scans) and Family (Premium plus family allergen profiles). Prices are shown before purchase in your device's currency.

  • iOS purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. Your subscription is governed by Apple's Standard End User License Agreement and these Terms together.
  • Android purchases are processed by Google through Google Play.
  • Auto-renewal: subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the next renewal.
  • Cancellation: you can cancel at any time in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings. You'll keep paid access through the end of the current billing period.
  • Refunds: refunds for iOS are handled by Apple according to their published refund policies. Refunds for Android are handled by Google Play. We don't process refunds directly for mobile purchases.
  • Free-tier limits: free users get 5 scans per day. The count resets at midnight UTC. This limit is enforced server-side and may change with reasonable notice.

AI analysis — not medical advice

◆ Important

Sift uses AI models (Google Gemini) and community-sourced product databases (Open Food Facts) to generate health scores, flagged ingredients, and recommendations. Everything Sift produces is for informational and educational purposes only.

Our AI output is not medical, nutritional, or dietary advice. It is not a substitute for guidance from a doctor, registered dietitian, or other qualified healthcare provider. AI can be wrong, incomplete, or out of date. Product data from Open Food Facts is submitted by volunteers and may contain errors.

If you have a food allergy or medical condition, always read the actual printed label on the product, and consult a qualified professional before making dietary decisions. Don't rely on Sift alone.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use Sift to violate any law or regulation, or to harm anyone.
  • Automate scans, scrape our data, or bypass the free-tier rate limit.
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract our source code, models, or training data.
  • Upload content that's illegal, fraudulent, infringes someone else's rights, or contains malware.
  • Use the AI analysis feature to manipulate health scores, inject prompts, or extract model data.
  • Create accounts on behalf of another person without their permission.
  • Interfere with the operation of the service, attack our infrastructure, or probe for vulnerabilities without authorization.

We may suspend access, terminate accounts, or pursue legal remedies for violations.

Your content

Photos you capture, scans you make, dietary preferences, and family profiles you create belong to you. By using Sift, you grant us a limited, worldwide, royalty-free license to process that content solely to provide the service — analyzing scans, storing your history, applying your preferences to AI output, and otherwise making the app work as described.

We don't sell your content. We don't use it to train our own or third-party AI models. You can delete individual scans or your entire account (with all its data) at any time from Profile → Delete Account.

Our content

The Sift name, logo, design, source code, and the AI-generated analysis output we produce belong to us (or to our licensors). We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the app for personal, non-commercial purposes.

You may not: copy, redistribute, sublicense, or modify our app or AI output; build a competing product using our output or our brand; remove or alter our notices and credits; or resell scan data commercially.

Third-party services

Sift integrates several third-party services to operate. Their own terms apply to the portions they provide:

  • Apple — iOS distribution, payments, Sign in with Apple
  • Google — Gemini AI analysis, Google Play distribution, Google Sign-In
  • Supabase — authentication, database, storage, Edge Functions
  • RevenueCat — subscription state management across platforms
  • Stripe — web payment processing (where applicable)
  • Open Food Facts — community product database lookup
  • Expo / EAS — app build and update infrastructure

We're not responsible for outages, policy changes, or errors in third-party services. Each has their own privacy policy and terms — see our Privacy Policy § 06 for links.

Disclaimers

Sift is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent allowed by law, we disclaim all warranties including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

We don't guarantee that the app will be error-free, continuously available, or produce accurate AI analysis in every case. Product data from Open Food Facts is volunteer-submitted and may be incorrect, out of date, or missing. Nutrition labels change over time — always trust the physical package label over any app.

Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Sift and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenues, data, or goodwill, arising from or related to your use of the app.

Our total aggregate liability for any claim arising out of these Terms or your use of Sift is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the twelve (12) months before the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) fifty U.S. dollars ($50).

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for fraud, willful misconduct, or anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.

Termination

You can stop using Sift at any time and delete your account from Profile → Delete Account. That removes your account and all linked personal data within thirty (30) days (except where we're required by law to retain records).

We may suspend or terminate your access, with or without notice, if you violate these Terms, abuse the service, create risk to other users or our infrastructure, or if required by law. Upon termination, your right to use Sift ends immediately. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (intellectual property, disclaimers, liability, disputes) continue to apply.

Governing law & disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute arising out of or related to these Terms or your use of Sift will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Florida, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.

If you live in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, this section does not limit the consumer-protection rights you have under your local mandatory law.

Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms to reflect changes in the service, applicable law, or our practices. When we do, we'll update the Last Updated date above and, for material changes, give at least thirty (30) days' advance notice via email to the address on file and/or an in-app notice. Continued use of Sift after the effective date of a revision means you accept the revised Terms.

If you don't agree with a material change, stop using the app and delete your account before the effective date. We'll keep prior versions of these Terms available on request.
